Duplicate titles and meta descriptions across pagesWhat it checks and how to fix it
What it checks
Compares the titles and meta descriptions of all audited pages. Warns when two or more pages share the same title or the same meta description, and passes when every one is unique.
Why it matters
Titles and descriptions are what search engines show in results and one of the main ways they tell pages apart. Pages sharing them compete with each other for the same queries, and Google often rewrites duplicated snippets with text of its own choosing. Duplicates also make search results look like the same page listed twice.
How to fix it
Give each page a title and a description that describe that page specifically: lead with what is unique (product
name, article topic, city) and put the brand at the end.
<title>DMARC setup guide — Example</title>
<meta name="description" content="Roll out DMARC from p=none to p=reject in four steps, without losing legitimate email.">
For templated pages, build them from the record instead of using one fixed string:
<% content_for :title, [@product.name, @product.category.name, "Example"].join(" — ") %>
Paginated or filtered listings that repeat the same title should add the page number or filter, or point their
canonical at the main listing.
