Domain expiry date monitoringWhat it checks and how to fix it
What it checks
Reads the domain's registration expiry date from WHOIS, falling back to RDAP. Passes when it is 60 or more days away, warns between 30 and 59 days or when the date cannot be determined, and fails when the domain expires in under 30 days or has already expired.
Why it matters
An expired domain takes the website, email and every service on it offline at once, and once the grace period is over anyone can register it and receive your traffic and mail. Renewal reminders often go to an old address, and auto-renewal fails silently on an expired card, which is why lapses happen even at large companies.
How to fix it
Renew the domain now, and make the next renewal automatic:
- Turn on auto-renew at your registrar and check that the payment card on file is valid.
- Renew for several years at once where the registry allows it.
- Keep the registrant and admin contact email on an address that is monitored, ideally not on the domain itself.
- Turn on the registrar lock (clientTransferProhibited) so the domain cannot be moved away.
